Azusa Man Injured in Explosion

On October 9th, 2017, at 8:37 AM Azusa PD Officers received a call of an explosion and smoke coming from a residence on the 1000 Blk N Sunset, Azusa. Officers located a 37 year old male resident who was suffering from burn injuries to his upper body and face. He was treated at the scene by LA Co Fire Paramedics and later taken to a local trauma center. During the subsequent investigation it was determined that the explosion occurred in the rear yard of the residence, which caused burn damage to a truck that was parked in the back yard. No structures were damaged. Officers located chemicals that are flammable and/or explosive in nature on the property. Therefore, the entire block, and several other nearby residences were evacuated. Two elementary schools were placed on lock-down and one of those two was completely evacuated.

The Los Angeles County Bomb Squad and Haz Mat Team responded, along with the LA Co Fire Department Haz Mat team. Azusa PD detectives, along with the aforementioned personnel are conducting a detailed investigation into the cause of the explosion. It has not yet been determined what role the chemicals found at the residence had in the explosion.
